Can you tell us about your career path and what brought you to Domaines Bourotte-Audy?

Mathieu Bonté: "I fell in love with viticulture at a very young age. After studying agricultural engineering and oenology, I was fortunate to work in several prestigious estates both in France and abroad.

Coming to Pomerol was a dream come true: it’s an exceptional terroir where precision and excellence are at the heart of everything we do."

What makes the Pomerol terroir so unique?

Mathieu Bonté: "The secret lies in the richness of our clay-gravel soils and the gentle climate, which allow our grape varieties, particularly Merlot, to fully express themselves. Each plot has its own unique identity, and our role is to reveal its full complexity. Here, we don’t just produce wine; we tell a story with every bottle."

What are the challenges you face as a technical director?

Mathieu Bonté: "One of the main challenges is finding a balance between tradition and innovation. We must preserve the heritage of the estates while integrating modern techniques to respect the environment and enhance quality. Climate variations are also a major concern, but they push us to be ever more attentive and responsive."

Any advice for fully enjoying our wines?

Mathieu Bonté: "Take the time to enjoy our wines in a relaxed setting, with friends or family. I recommend decanting them to release all their aromas and pairing them with a good meal. Our wines are made to be shared.

And of course, nothing beats tasting them on-site: visiting the estate is the best way to understand the soul of our wines."

Is there a particular wine you’d recommend?

Mathieu Bonté: "Château Bonalgue 2020. It was my first vintage in Pomerol, and it was quite special. It was the year of the lockdown, but the weather that year was fantastic, allowing us to work with ease. The result: a wine full of roundness, very expressive fruit, and incredible finesse—a true Pomerol in all its splendor!"

If you’d like to follow Mathieu’s advice and visit the estate to taste our wines, book your visit now.
