THE ESTATE'S ORIGNIS

The Barons of Montagne
Walking along the long avenue of cypresses leading to the château is to embrace centuries of winegrowing history.  The ivy-covered façade reveals the tower that once overlooked the fiefdom of the Barons of Montagne who planted the first vines in the Middle Ages. The hillsides in Lussac were already sought-after for the quality of their clay soils with outcrops of asteriated limestone, typical of Saint-Emilion.

IMPRESSIVE BIODIVERSITY

Each year, our fallows are sown with various crops, such as sorghum and field beans, and plentiful flowers including poppies, bird’s-foot trefoil and daisies. They represent a hotspot of biodiversity for wildlife and provide nitrogen and minerals essential to the balance and sustainability of our soil.

Covering an area of almost three hectares, Château du Courlat boasts meadows, woods and a pond - a real centre of biodiversity and a complete ecosystem where it is not uncommon to come across deer, ducks and cranes! The site is a real haven of peace, full of harmony, which benefits the vineyard by enriching the natural habitat.

A large colony of bats has taken up residence at Château du Courlat. Regularly studied by the French Bird Protection League, the colony made it into an article on Bloomberg. Bats are indeed precious and natural allies in the fight against vineyard pests.

ONE TERROIR / THREE WINES

A promising terroir
The slightly hilly terroir at Courlat is composed of very clayey soil on a subsoil of carbonate marl. This outstanding soil provides a perfect mineral supply and excellent water regulation for the vines, particularly in the dry summers we have been experiencing for the past few years.
